What decides today
It’s a drought August and heat is the whole story. Every river in range is below its historical median for this date — most sit at 30–60%, and the lower Arkansas is at 8%. Nothing is blown out. Nothing needs to drop into shape. The only question that matters is how warm the water gets by mid-afternoon.
That pushes everything toward cold tailwaters and elevation. The top three are all South Platte tailwaters, and that isn’t a lack of imagination — cold water is simply the scarce thing right now, and dam releases are where it is.
If you remember one thing: fish early. Most of this list is genuinely good from 6:30 to 11 AM and genuinely rough after 2 PM. Carry a thermometer. At 67°F, go home.
Arkansas River — Pueblo tailwater
CLOSED NOON–MIDNIGHT DAILY since 6 Aug 2026. CPW voluntary closure from Pueblo Boulevard east downstream to Fountain Creek. Near the dam afternoon temps hold around 65°F; near Dutch Clark they pass 73°F, and near Moffat they exceed 80°F. Morning fishing is still open and still good.
South Platte — Dream Stream
CLOSED NOON–MIDNIGHT DAILY per CPW. The gauge read 71.2°F at 1:30 PM today. Shallow meadow water with no shade and Aurora holding releases near 100 cfs. Dawn only, if at all.
